On Friday, June 28, the Saxum Visitor Center chapel opened its doors for the annual celebration of St. Josemaría, whose feast day is June 26th. This is the second time that the visitor center was able to host this Mass, which was even more special as this year on the 28th we also celebrated the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Rev. José Benito Cabaniña (Regional Vicar of Opus Dei in the Holy Land) celebrated the mass together with Rev. Joaquin Paniello (Vicar Secretary of Opus Dei in the Holy Land) and Rev. Ramón López Mondejar (Vicar from Japan), who is visiting the Holy Land.
The homily focused on St. Josemaría’s great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As St. Josemaria said in his homily on the feast of the Sacred Heart on June 17, 1966, “On today’s feast we should ask our Lord to give us a good heart, capable of having compassion for other people’s pain. Only with such a heart can we realize that the true balm for the suffering and anguish in this world is love, charity” (Christ is Passing By, 167).
The chapel showed the diversity of Christians in the Holy Land, with friends from the local community as well as pilgrims and travelers from the United States, Spain, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and more. With the diversity of languages during the celebration – readings and homily in English and the “Our Father” in Arabic – it was easy to recognize the universality of the Church on this day.
